Wow! 99 years is a long time for any event to go on uninterrupted and the community of Belle Fourche has supported and promoted this event for nearly a century. Today we visit with Clay Crago who is in his first year as chairman of the Black Hills Roundup committee. In this episode Clay talks about what it's like to put together a big event like this - the challenges and rewards. Laura Butler went from scientist to savory chef.

In this episode of Livin’ Local we’ll learn how this genetic research student from Louisiana started on a career track in dentistry, to one that involved population science to one that involves population satisfaction through fresh-baked goods and unique sweet and savory crepes.

With generations of family recipes, including her grandmother’s “slap your mama good” biscuits, Laura is on a mission to please every guest who visits her Green Oven Bakery in downtown Spearfish. With generations of talented bakers in the family she always had a hidden passion for baking which is now on full display on main street. A passion that includes creating delicious and mouthwatering baked goods and sweet and savory crepes with her own special ingredient that makes them extra good.

In this episode we’ll learn how the restaurant and bakery got its name. We’ll hear about growing a garden in Wyoming and learn the challenges and rewards of running a bakery. Also, we’ll find out what okra and figs have in common.

And, during our speed round, we’ll find out something about the Green Oven that you probably didn’t know. Laura also tells us her secret to success professional and personally and where she sees the business in five years.

Today on Livin' Local we meet a former oilfield worker turned restaurant entreprenuer - Marcus Dacar of Dickie's Barbeque Pit of the Northern Hills.

Marcus tells us how Dickeys began back in the early 1940's.  

There are unique challenges to running a restaurant to serve a specialty item like smoked meats in a fast casual environment.
Marcus talks about the process for smoking meat including the time it takes and how that is coordinated to meet the customer’s needs.
If you’re not hungry yet, Marcus runs down the menu and you’re probably going to be thinking about making a trip.

Marcus does give us his two main secrets to making delicious smoked meats.

Then we’ll learn about Marcus’ background. Growing up with parents who were in the energy business he moved a ot and is glad to be settled back in the Black Hills region where some of his relatives have lived for a long while. Marcus is an outdoor enthusiast, mountain biker, hiking, skiing and hunting are his interests.

Prior to owning the restaurant Marcus talks about life working in the oilfields of North Dakota. And then how circumstances led him to owning his first business in Spearfish. He tells how he wanted a franchise business that felt authentic with a real hometown feel that gave owners local freedoms.

Marcus talks about the 3 biggest challenges to running the business and also the rewards.

In our speed round Marcus talks about the “secret” menu at Dickies. And also the keys to success in running a business with smoked meats and the personal habits that help keep him ready and focused on the job.  And we wrap up by getting a sense of what’s ahead in the next 5 years for Dickies.

Today on Black Hills Livin' Local we meet Jodi Pickett, the owner of The Massage Way in Spearfish. 

We learn how the business got it’s name and a where Jodi received her schooling. We also learn about Olympian Michael Phelps favored type of treatment, the less well-known “cupping” therapy and why it’s a different type of treatment.

Why does massage therapy feel so good? We get a better scientific understanding of why we love massage so much. And specifically how our muscles come to need massage therapy and exactly what massage does to solve the problem. 

Areas covered in this episode include lymph draining massage, cupping therapy, deep tissue massage and reflexology. Jodi talks about how a personal experience brought her to learn massage therapy and bring her practice back to South Dakota.

And, I end up receiving my very first reflexology session.  Wow.

In this episode we learn that the unique sourdough pizza dough uses a starter that was created more than 130 years ago.

This season will feature an all-star game, something on the 4th of July Spearfish hasn’t seen in years, and an outline of how the post season will work. We’ll cap it off with a look ahead to where the league sees itself in 5 years.
